What does LGBTQ stand for?
Lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and questioning (or queer)
What does reproductive justice have to do with LGBTQ issues?
We are partners with PROMO and HRC because we know that activists for reproductive justice and activists for the rights of LGBTQ persons are natural allies. Both issues are really about the privacy of adults to make their own decisions regarding sexual partners and reproduction.
Legal and constitutional realities link all of those striving for sexual equality. Roe v. Wade, the Supreme Court case establishing the right to abortion, was decided on a constitutional right to privacy and subsequent court rulings supporting LGBTQ rights have often cited Roe v. Wade as the foundation for their decision.
Reproductive justice supports all persons in their struggle to create the families they desire. This includes supporting same-sex couples who wish to adopt, carry a child through IVF, or foster parent. We believe this is a matter of justice for those who wish to be parents as well as for those children who need loving parents.
Faith Aloud representing in the Pride Parade in 2008
Discrimination against same-sex couples is often couched in terms very similar to arguments against abortion. The language that is used to discriminate is filled with religious jargon about the immorality of sex outside of legal marriage and is based on an assumption that women who seek abortions have engaged in immoral sexual behavior. Faith Aloud opposes this stereotyping and discrimination, and opposes any other religious attempt to control the sexual behavior of consenting adults in a mutually satisfying relationship.
Prevention of HIV infection is a common concern for all people who support healthy sexuality. HIV, HPV, and other sexually transmitted infections do not discriminate. We encourage safe sex practices that include condom use for all men and women.
Join us in the annual summer Pride parades and festivals held in most cities.
Faith Aloud can recommend clergy who are sympathetic to the spiritual needs of same-sex couples for counseling, parenting issues, partnering ceremonies, and other religious services.
